I am already making them get a job!

In my class, I think it is important to teach them responsibility even at an early age. To help them learn this concept,  I assign a few jobs each week.

We want to be worker bees in K5!

Some of the jobs our bees have are:

Line leader - This child leads our line anytime we leave the classroom. He/she must walk in a straight line and facing forward at all times. The others are always following the leader!

Caboose - This child is at the end of the line. Most children would not like to be at the end but not when you are the CABOOSE! He/she turns off the lights and makes sure no one is left behind.

Messenger - This child may go with Miss McCallister or myself to run an errand. Us big kids need help sometimes too!

Table cleaner - This child is responsible for wiping the table after snack. We simply can not work on a wet messy table.

Door holder - We have several doors here at MGCS that we go through each day. This child holds the doors for each one of us as we go through them.

Special helper - This child helps me out whenever I need it( sometimes it is very often!). His/her job would be something like helping me pass out papers, crayons, glue, etc.

Trash collector - This child will help gather the trash and go with Miss McCallister to take it to the dump.

Room checker - This child helps to keep the room tidy. He/she will check it at the end of the day to make sure it is clean.

The great thing about these jobs............I do not have to pay them!

Our Letter Book

We just finished learning to recognize our vowels and the sound they make. Today, we started our consonants. Each time we introduce a letter, the class makes a page for their individual ABC books. When we finish the alphabet, we will put the books together. Hopefully, this will be something memorable your child will treasure. Here is a peak into what we have done so far.........

A is for ants eating an apple.

E is for elephant.

I is for igloo

O is for octopus

U is for umbrella

Today we did T is for teeth.

The class enjoys making these pages and I have enjoyed watching them show their creative side!

Calendar Time

I am a huge fan of calendar time! I believe it is a good way to quickly teach several different concepts each day.

During calendar we talk about the months, days, year, days of the week, weather, seasons, appropriate clothing to wear,  graphing, birthdays, teeth lost, money, number of days in school, time, addition and subtraction and counting by ones, twos, fives and tens.

So as you can see we cover many math concepts in a short amount of time. I make my calendar time very interactive so the children love it!

The Little Turtle

We will be learning several different poems throughout the year. From these poems, the children will learn punctuation marks, sight words, nouns, reciting and so much more.

Our first poem was The Little Turtle.

After you see it, you may remember doing this as a child.

Their favorite parts are the snapping  and the catching!

We also made turtles to go with the poem.

I love watching the unique creativity each child shows!

I is for igloo

We have started the year off reviewing the vowels during phonics time. Our first vowel was the letter I. For cooking day, we made igloos.

Each child received a half of an apple, peanut butter and marshmallows. The peanut butter was spread over the apple to act as a glue for the marshmallows.

The class really enjoyed this activity!

Thank you to all the parents who signed up to send in items for cooking day each Friday. The class looks forward to this day!

So far their favorite thing to do is.......

Centers!

I would like to take a moment to introduce the center.

The reading center - A place where they can relax in a bean bag while reading a favorite book.

The writing center - Here they practice their writing skills.

The listening center - If they do not want to read a book, then they can choose to listen to one.

The computer center - These are not internet accessible but we do have several learning games.
The home center - This is the favorite! Here they are able to practice skills for later in life.

The art center - A shelf houses many different choices such as chalk, coloring with markers, crayons, pencils and paint, cutting with different styles of scissors. play dough any many others.

The last center which for some reason I did not get a picture of is the math center. This seems to be the second favorite among the class. There are many types of manipulatives in this center.

Ask your child which one is his/her favorite!

How do I keep them from running over each other to get to their favorite center? Easy! They all have a clip with their number on it. It can be found on the centers sign.

When their name is called, they simply find their number and clip it to the bear tag of their choice.

I teach the class specific subjects but I feel the children learn a lot from each other. Centers allow them to do just that!

Welcome to Mrs. Weed's Kindergarten!

I have decided to start something new this year.......a classroom blog. I wanted to create the opportunity for the parents to watch their child blossom throughout the year. Hopefully, I can capture daily a glimpse of what we do and learn. For all my parents, thank you for visiting! Your child is a blessing from God. I hope that you will find this to be rewarding!
